Growing Bright Minds!
Summer Learning & the Rise of Microschools
Hello families!
As we settle into the rhythm of summer, it’s easy to feel the pressure to “keep up” or “stay on track”—especially when it comes to academic growth. But what if we told you that some of the most powerful learning happens not in textbooks or classrooms, but in the slow, sunny days of summer?
Whether your child is in our tutoring program or part of our microschool, we want to remind you of something simple and powerful: children are always learning. Every question, every story, every backyard experiment is an opportunity to spark deeper understanding, connection, and curiosity.
In fact, when learning is playful, interest-led, and integrated into everyday life, it sticks. Here are a few simple ways to invite more natural learning into your home this summer:
Everyday Curiosity Builders:
Follow Their Questions. Whether it’s “How do satellites work?” or “Why can you see the moon during the day?”, treat questions like launching pads. Take 10 minutes to research together—or let your student teach you what they find.
Narrate the World—With Depth. Go beyond pointing things out: talk about current events, how a traffic light is programmed, or why prices vary between brands. Ask “What do you think?” often.
Create a Curiosity Corner (or Digital Folder). This could incorporate books, sketchpads, nature journals. And older kids can curate articles, TED-Ed videos, podcasts, or weird facts that interest them. Let it be messy and theirs.
Use Their Interests—Critically. Into gaming? Look into coding, storytelling, or design. Love sports? Explore stats, sports journalism, or nutrition science. Fan of influencers? Analyze what makes content engaging or ethical.
Real-World Challenges. Invite kids to plan a meal for the family (on a budget), write a letter to the editor, calculate gas mileage, design a travel itinerary, or start a passion project.
Read Beyond Books. Let them explore reviews, blogs, manuals, infographics, transcripts, and apps that encourage layered thinking and comprehension—especially when tied to what they care about.
Ask Big Questions. What invention would change the world? What’s something people get wrong about middle schoolers? If you could teach a class on anything, what would it be?
This summer let’s lean into wonder, slow down, and let your child’s questions lead the way. You’re not just helping them “keep up”—you’re building a lifelong love of learning.
“Let boredom breathe. That space is often where creativity—and independent learning—comes to life.”
What Actually are Microschools?
…and why are they becoming such a popular educational choice?
Microschools are small, student-centered learning environments that blend the best of homeschooling, private school, and tutoring. With class sizes typically under ten, students receive personalized instruction, mentorship, and flexibility that larger classrooms can’t offer. As more families seek alternatives to traditional education, microschools are gaining national attention for their ability to bridge learning gaps, reduce school-related anxiety, and encourage interest based learning.
Backed by growing research and real results, microschools are especially effective for students who are behind grade level or feeling lost in the system. At Skool•ed Collaborative Learning Center, we’ve seen firsthand how the right environment can unlock a student’s potential in just one school year. If you're curious whether a microschool might be a good fit for your child, we’d love to show you what sets our program apart.
And if you’re interested in what the research is saying…
Recent U.S. research and data paint a clear picture: microschools are not just a niche trend—they're a meaningful part of K–12 education. The RAND Corporation’s March 2025 report estimates 1–2 million students enrolled in these personalized settings, noting their success in supporting learners with academic or social‑emotional needs. A January 2023 national survey by EdChoice found 8% of parents already have a child in a microschool, and ~33% are exploring them. Meanwhile, a June 2025 Business Insider article highlights the rapid post-pandemic growth of the movement.
