Fireside to Forts
Warm Up to Reading This Winter!
Dear Families,
As the winter chill sets in, it’s the perfect time to create warm, lasting memories with your family through the joy of reading. Whether you’re huddled by the fireplace, building a cozy blanket fort, or sipping hot cocoa together, we’ve got five tips that will help you make reading a treasured family tradition this season.
Build a Cozy Book Nook or Reading Fort!
Transform your living room into a cozy book nook! Gather blankets, pillows, and twinkling lights to create a magical space where everyone can curl up with a good book. Take turns reading aloud or enjoying quiet time together as you each explore your own stories.
Create a Snuggles and Sweets Storytime!
Make reading time extra special by pairing a beloved read aloud with seasonal treats. Try a mug of hot chocolate (a favorite when reading The Polar Express), homemade cookies, or popcorn. This simple addition can make reading feel like an event your kids look forward to.
Host a Book vs Movie Night!
Choose a book with a movie adaptation, like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Polar Express, or The Snowy Day. Read the book together, then watch the movie to compare the two. Discuss how the characters, plot, and setting were brought to life on screen, and which version your family liked better.
Create a Family Reading Challenge!
Encourage a little friendly competition with a reading challenge. Set a family goal—like finishing a certain number of books by New Year’s—or download and print our winter themed Books, Bingo, and Blankets bingo card!
Fireside Fables and Family Tales!
Take turns sharing favorite parts of a book or telling made-up stories around the fire or a virtual “campfire” on a chilly evening. This encourages creativity, conversation, and connection—especially with kids who love to imagine and explore.
Don’t forget to check out your local library! Many libraries offer winter-themed story times, book bundles, or reading programs to help your family discover new favorites.
We’d love to see how your family warms up to reading this winter! Share a photo of your reading adventures on social media and tag us (IG @getskool.ed or @letsgetskool.ed on FB)—we can’t wait to see your forts, books, bingo cards and all the joy that comes with them.
Wishing you a cozy and book-filled holiday season,
